Eating fresh vegetables that you’ve planted, grown and plucked from your own garden is incredibly satisfying, and something that the whole family can enjoy. If you’re thinking of giving home vege gardening a crack, building a raised garden is a good place to start.

Jenkin A-lign products are BRANZ-appraised so you can be sure they're fit for purpose
Choosing cheaper products to save a few bucks here or there can be all too tempting when building or renovating on a budget. But don’t be fooled! Some substandard building materials could end up costing you more in the long run.

Shady Situations- Creating the Ultimate Outdoor Space
06 March 2016
The Block NZ does Outdoor Rooms well
This summer has been a scorcher hasn’t it! While a huge backyard is a major drawcard, what many buyers are now looking for in a property is an outdoor space that offers shade during the summer months (yes please!) and shelter during winter.
Reclads are an increasingly popular option for Kiwi homeowners wanting to update, weatherproof and future-proof their house. It makes good sense if you consider that for many of us our home is our biggest asset!
Our founder Harry Jenkin held a simple philosophy “You don’t sharpen tools — you keep them sharp.” Today, almost one hundred years on, “staying sharp” is still the driving force behind our business – as we strive to bring integrity, innovation and foresight into everything we do.
High on the Esk Hills in Bayview, Hawkes Bay sits a rather special house. The home is exceptionally good looking, white fresh timber with wraparound deck and views - but there are other factors that make it special.
At Jenkin Timber we are huge fans of getting stuck in to get things done, and doing it right. All of our products have been designed to save both novices and builders alike time and money – while offering ultimate peace of mind.
A-lign Fencing is a hit on The Block NZ year after year.
“The A-lign fences are a lot easier to put up than I thought. They really just click in together. It’s just about cutting them right and nailing them in.” Such were Minanne’s famous last words on The Block NZ Villa Wars this week!

House prices these days are enough to make your head spin. Auckland house prices have risen by 5% over the last three months alone and nationally by an average of 3.3%. It’s not all doom and gloom though, and planning a new build could be the most sensible way to go to keep costs down.

New Zealanders are big on weatherboard. It is strong and durable, long lasting, made with natural timbers, and offers the classic quality look that Kiwis love. Building or renovating a home with weatherboard goes hand in hand with installing a good looking fence- and that’s why we des

Kiwis are world renowned for their love of DIY, home renovations and just getting their hands stuck in and giving it a go! We are well known as being dreamers, innovators, and doers. And with this reputation for being able to put our hand to anything, who wouldn’t love a good ole’ challenge to prove our number 8 wire mentality?
Fences are multi-purpose. They offer privacy, clearly delineate a property line, and are an essential element if you happen to have any pint-size critters (of either the four or two-legged variety running around).

A weathertight A-lign Concealed Fix home
It is hard to escape the fact that it is winter. While not the coldest winter on record it has felt long, grey and…wet. And it’s at times like this we are particularly grateful for a warm, dry and cosy home.
Re-purposing pallet boxes has become a bit of a craze, and for good reason. Pallets are a fantastic source of cheap timber, and, given the number of different wood finishes available, they are very versatile.
The Builders Breakfast was a chance to show off Jenkin products
There is no better way to kick off a Friday than with a massive cooked breakfast, so that is exactly what the team at Carters Glenfield did last week, putting on a spread for around 125 builders at the Pupuke Golf Club in Forrest Hill.
Winter has well and truly hit. If you are anything like us, all you will want to do over the winter months is hunker down by the fire and watch the footy. However, there are a couple of odd jobs you might want to think about before you close up that garden shed, retire the deck, and switch on the T.V.

While we can’t all grunt like Tim ‘The-Tool-Man’ Taylor, having a shed (man-cave) to rival even “Tool-man” status is definitely possible. The key to a perfect shed is choosing the right building materials for your needs.

If you have any doubts about where NZ is heading, rest assured that the future is in safe hands with our younger generation. And keeping our good ole’ “No.8 wire” spirit alive and kicking is a young lad hailing from the heart of the Waikato.
A timber deck is the perfect compliment to your home.

As we finally farewell the chilly winter, preparation can begin for those lovely warm months of alfresco living that Kiwi’s love. After a few months of hibernation indoors the backyard might be looking less than enticing and a little neglected.

Jenkin partners with Dulux paint for an excellent finish.
Building a house can be one of the most difficult tasks to undertake when it comes to the relentless decision making that is required with a new build, but surprisingly it is often the little details which can be the most stressful.
A stunning outdoor impression instantly adds value
At various stages in life, differing circumstances and changing needs can lead property owners into selling their much loved home, and getting the best sale price for a property is generally pretty high on the agenda.
Weatherboard, or ‘clapboard’ homes have been popular in New Zealand since settlers arrived building small one and two bedroom cottages. Detailed villas dominated home building designs from the early 1900’s. Weatherboard itself consists of long thin wooden boards which overlap
It can be tempting to think that with the arrival of winter, you have a fully fledged excuse to hibernate, sleep and chill out for the next few months, escaping dreaded outdoor duties for the luxury of relaxing by the fire whilst eating copious amounts of comfort food ("for winter stores").
There are fences, and there are great fences. A great looking fence offers important street appeal and can give a strong first impression of your home. Whether your fence is looking a little worse for wear and needs a bit of a touch up or you are starting from scratch with a new build
The number one question when planning a home build is, “How much will it cost”? And it is an important question, as those with experience in the building industry will know that if you don’t plan your costs realistically from the word go, you could be heading for a Grand Designs scale disaster.
Home is where the heart is. Rebuilding Christchurch.

Recladding in Christchurch
This blog goes out to all the Cantabrians in Christchurch. A bit of a heavy topic but a very real one for the thousands of Southern Kiwis who were impacted by the Nasty McNasty earthquakes that began rocking the Garden City in September 2010.
Spotting a Leaky Home (Image sourced from www.stuff.co.nz)
You have probably heard a fair bit about “leaky buildings” over the past few years, a horrendous issue that has affected thousands of New Zealand home owners greatly. It’s pretty nuts, but between 22,000- 89,000 homes have weather-tightness issues....
Long gone are those easy, slumbering days when women had time to bake, craft and clean to their hearts content, and men were home by 4pm ready to potter on the car, mow the lawns or build a fence from scratch. The golden years, right?
